On 3 September 1943, the 8th Allied Army crossed the Strait of Messina. British and Canadians met only moderate resistance. On 8 September, the Italian radio broadcasts a proclamation by Marshal Badoglio who, on behalf of the Italian government, confirms the Cassibile armistice signed with the Anglo-Americans on 3 September 1943.

The Regia Aeronautica no longer exists; it is the Luftwaffe that is responsible for the entire air fight against the allies.

Complementing the opuscule "Italian Air Force - Regia Aeronautica 1943", this document draws up an accounting statement and an organization chart of the German order of battle in Italy to assume this mission.
