The First Aviation Meetings in the Cantal (1910-1913)

by Jean-Pierre Roc

Cercle des Collectionneurs du Cantal (1999)

It was in 1910, in Saint-Flour, that the Cantal aeronautics took off. The "Courrier d'Auvergne" had brought an aeroplane and its pilot, visible for 5 cents.

A year later, it was the turn of Jules Vedrines, a native of the Cantal, to make aviation history. In 1911, Aurillac gathered 10,000 people for a memorable meeting.

In 1912, Mauriac organised a meeting announcing the first parachute jump, but the attempt was cancelled at the last moment. Then, Saint-Flour, Allanches and Aurillac took their turn to organise these events and even the first races.

The author also gives us the calendars of all the events organised in the neighbouring departments: Allier, Aveyron, Corrèze, Creuse, Haute Loire, Loire and Lot, Lozère and Puy-de-Dôme.

The whole, pleasantly illustrated with numerous period photos.
